The Ten Trusts are: Rejoice that we are part of the animal kingdom. Respect all life. Open our minds, in humility, to animals and learn from them. Teach our children to respect and love nature. Be wise stewards of life on Earth. Value and help preserve the sounds of nature. Refrain from harming life in order to learn about it. Have the courage of our convictions. Praise and help those who work for animals and the natural world. Act knowing we are not alone and live with hope. ABANDONING ANIMALS

*****************************************************************
The individual who remembers that we are responsible for the beasts, children and those who can no longer fare for themselves - that is the individual who will prosper and thrive in times both harsh and plentiful. The individual who cannot or will not acknowledge these most basic tenets of humanity - who disparages the inherent value and worth of the meek animal and how they enrich our lives, they are destined for a life of inhumanity and may be the one flailing their hands when they themselves most need assistance.  ~Unknown

Maxwell R.I.P.  This poor baby was starved and went without vetting for so long that he went into liver failure. Maxwell was a very nice two year old Brown and White Pittie boy. He was super sweet and really loved people.  Maxwell and his mate Maggie were found abandoned after their "owners" moved out of their house. Neighbors said they were left behind for almost two months. Their owner was located and Maggie and Maxwell were put on hold at the shelter in hopes that the owners would come back. They never did. Maggie is a love bug and does not understand why her family did not take her with them.

KY: Ruben Boxer Emaciated and Abused by Owner

BEFORE
~~~Ruben's picture is enough to break your heart. It was a 10 degree snowy day when Ruben was found in this condition in an outdoor pen. He was rushed to the vet, and they believe that this poor dog had received enough blunt trauma to his face to cause the massive swelling that you see in the picture. They believe that he may have had preexisting tumor that, when hit, ruptured Ruben's eye.
AFTER
Ruben underwent emergency surgery in which his right eye was completely removed. We do not know how long this poor dog was made to suffer with this horrible injury, but we do know that he is safe now...he is warm, fed, and recovering. Besides his horrendous eye injury, Ruben was SKIN AND BONES.  ADOPTED
ANIMAL NEGLECT
*****************************************************************
It is as if life had said, 'I am going to send you into a world of cruelty. I shall make you sensitive to pain, fear, heat, cold, hunger and starvation. In this world of cruelty, I shall make you defenseless. In addition, I shall strike you dumb.' This is the kind of world that animals are born into. ~ Grace Johnson
*****************************************************************
Howard came into the shelter with severe injuries. The injuries appeared to have come from his body being tangled up in a chain or rope. He had also broken off all his teeth at the gums (probably trying to free himself). No information on his previous life or owners. He was taken to a vet to be treated for severe injuries. Howard is estimated to be about 8 years old. He is extremely emaciated with a body condition score of 2/9. Howard is also heartworm positive, has low serum protein levels (albumin at 1.7 which is a concern for delayed wound healing), and has two open wounds. The wound on his left front leg is severely necrotic and infected.
 I see little souls wearing fur,
souls who bark and souls who purr....
Born unwanted and unloved,
I see all this and more from above....
I watch them suffer, I see them cry,
I see them lost, I watch them die....
I see unwanted thousands born....
and when they die...nobody mourns....
These are castaways who will never see love or security....
A few short months they starve and roam,
Or caged in shelters--nobody takes home....
We cry, we feel, we love....
Our presence now only known from God above....
My pain and suffering came to an end,
so don't cry for me, my person, my friend....
The living ones need you now....
Please stop their abuse somehow.
BACKYARD BREEDERS
*****************************************************************
Our goal: to convince people to rescue and adopt instead of buying or selling animals, to disavow the language and concept of animal ownership. ~Eliot Katz
*****************************************************************
Knoxville, TN: There is a 8 year old male pittie that survives next door and the family is moving to Florida. They have given me until Sunday to find him a home or they are putting him down. He has no physical problems, just needs food. He would have already starved or froze to death had I not been going over there and taking care of him. He has been in that kennel 75% of his life and deserves to be loved and taken care of just once before he dies! He is all wiggles when I go over to see or feed him. They were backyard breeders for the last 7 years, and I have tried for 7 years to put it to a stop, to no avail! I have rescued a male and female pit from them to keep them from dying. No Update
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The following excellent description was provided by www.allaboutpetswa.com in their section on puppy mills and backyard breeders

A backyard breeder is anyone who breeds cats, dogs, rabbits etc, and can answer yes to one or more of the following;

  • Someone who breeds unregistered purebred animals and sells them as purebreds without papers
  • Someone who is looking for a quick buck
  • Someone who drastically undercuts the price of registered purebred breeders
  • Someone who does not care who buys their animals or for what purpose
  • Someone who lets animals go at seven weeks or younger (dogs / cats), so that they do not have to spend any money on vaccinations - nor do they have to approach a vet and admit to what they are doing
  • Someone who does not offer a health guarantee, contract or even take the phone number of  buyers
  • Someone who will place their animals for sale in pet stores
  • Someone who has no thought or care to good companion animal husbandry
  • Someone who has no thought or care to genetic good health or defects.

BLACK CAT SYNDROME

*****************************************************************
 It doesn't matter if a cat is black or white, so long as it catches mice. ~Deng Xiaoping
*****************************************************************

Bakersfield, CA: URGENT...Black Cat Will Die Because...

This sweet 6 year old, female cat will die because her owner is pregnant and they do not want the cat in the house. They have been trying for months to find a home for the cat.  They will have the cat euthanized if they cannot find a home for it. This is particularly sad because this quiet creature has done nothing and will pay the ultimate price. The cat is spayed and basically unassuming. It is strictly an indoor cat. It has never gone outside and has no desire to do so.  NO UPDATE.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A large majority of the cats in shelters across the country that never find homes are black. Judged by the color of their fur--and not by their character or personality. These beautiful black creatures spend the end of their lives watching all the other animals being accepted into new homes. Ultimately, they are finally chosen for the one thing they do not want: euthanasia. This is a travesty.
Black cats are the last cats adopted from shelters and rescues because of old myths and superstitions linking them to witches, devils, and bad luck. That is their bad luck! More black cats are euthanized than non-black cats.
In 2002, The Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science published a study by the University of California, School of Veterinary Medicine that examined the factors that determine the adoption of an animal, including the color of the animal's coat. The nine month study established that potential adopters considered a black cat less desirable and, therefore, increased the cat's risk of euthanasia. The study revealed that black cats were half as likely to be adopted as tabby cats and two-thirds less likely than white cats to be adopted. In total, only 660 (20%), of the 3,301 cats who were offered for adoption were given a chance at a loving home. Sadly, the remaining 2,641 cats were euthanized.
Portland, IN~ Drake *URGENT* Border Collie, Labrador Retriever Large Adult Male Dog
Drake is housed in front run 4. He is a sweet little gentleman that has little chance of being "picked" out of the overcrowded shelter as a black dog. It takes a special person to adopt a "plain black dog." Shelters and rescue groups are flooded with black Labs and black Lab mixes, who suffer from "plain black dog" syndrome. Rescue groups will often receive 20 applications for a yellow Lab mix for every 1 for a black Lab mix of the same age, health, and temperamen
For many dogs awaiting adoption, the speed with which they find a home may rest not on their breed, gender or age but on one trait that has no bearing on their personality or temperament. Shelter officials have dubbed it black dog syndrome -- the propensity of dark-coated animals to be passed over for adoption in favor of their lighter counterparts. Skeptics say the syndrome is an urban legend, but shelter and rescue leaders insist the phenomenon is very, very real.
*****************************************************************
DENNIS A842188 - INTAKE 12/21/09 - ON THE E LIST TONIGHT - IF A RESCUE OR ADOPTER DOES NOT COME FORWARD, HE WILL BE PUT DOWN.
A VOLUNTEER WROTE: Dennis is a very handsome "pinto" pit terrier, that lovely white with light brown markings, like a pinto pony. Very pretty dog! He weighs a little less than fifty pounds, not too big at all, and he does love his treats, as evidenced when he was out for his photo shoot in the back pen, so he'd be a breeze to train. He also did fine with the other dogs out there. He was rated No Concern at intake, and went on to receive very good marks on his SAFER behavior test. He's only a year old, so young to be where he is, but he only needs to find the right person to love him.
EUTHANIZED
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When I was a kid, they demonized the German Shepherd. Then later on, the Dobie became the "dangerous" and "unpredictable" dog. Now it's the Pittie. It seems there's always some dog they have to kick around. Don't forget the Rotties, the Chows, the Cane Corsos and other "dangerous" breeds. It's all BS.  It's how you train your dog. Killing off the breed is just stupid because some people don't know or don't take the time to train their dogs. The dogs should not have to pay for the human's mistake.

Most of those breeds fought along side soldiers in WW2. Now look how they're treated.

The media has to shoulder so much of the blame for stigmatizing these dogs. They just love their sensationalism. There have even been cases where a Pittie has been reported as involved in an incident, when it was another breed. According to recent testing of 122 dog breeds by the American Temperament Testing Society, the American Pit Bull Terrier achieved a passing rate 85.3 percent of the time. Golden Retrievers 83.2 percent, Collies 79.4, Beagles at 78.2 percent, and Standard Schnauzers, a surprisingly low 63.5 percent. Check out this link to see how your breed did: http://www.atts.org/statistics.html

Just a Staffy Cross

Today is just another day - to me they're all the same
I have the worst of genes you see, I bear the 'Staffy' shame
The shame is in our numbers, there's thousands with no home
Thousands just like me you'll find, in kennels all alone

My mum was 'just a Staffy', my father - well who knows?
Mum too became unwanted, as the last puppy goes
And then begins the process, of money-making deals
A life of 'moving on' unfolds, who cares how the Staffy feels?
If you have the cash to hand, the Staffy pup is yours
But that pup is getting bigger now, just look at those big paws

You bought me for your image, thought I'd make you look more tough
But you'll find my boisterous nature has already got too much
If you had thought to train me, with kindness and with praise
You would have had a faithful friend to share your darkest days
I would lay down my life for you, but you simply cannot see
You make sure you get your money back on what you paid for me

And on it goes, until one day, I'm no longer worth a dime
The retail on an adult Staff - not worth the waste of time
So what happens to a Staffy now? Do you really want to know?
Do you care what will become of us, when we leave our final home?

Have you ever thought to wonder, "where is that Staffy now?"
The 'Staffy' has another name; he's become a 'stray' somehow
Me, I was put in to a car and driven far away
The door held open, I jumped out, I thought to run and play
It was with joy and happy heart I turned to look for you
You drove away with all my trust and a piece of my heart too

I wandered round for many days before I was brought here
Now I wait with heavy heart, trepidation and with fear
Seven days is all I have you see, seven days for you to claim
The little dog that you threw out, for which you have no shame

This is my last goodbye now my seven days are up
If only more thought had gone in to the future of that pup
As the needle empties to my veins I lay down with one last sigh
I'm sorry I was born a Staffy, because it means that I must die.

CHAINED DOGS

*****************************************************************
We can judge the heart of a man by the way he treats his animals. ~Immanuel Kant
*****************************************************************

 Max was starving and emaciated. We don't know how old he is, but we do know he was been chained for at least a year. Someone in the neighborhood reached out to Dogs Deserve Better for help...The neighbor, as well as a volunteer, walked into the backyard and over to Max to pet him and check out his condition. As they were in the backyard (that had no fence and no "No trespassing sign"), a vehicle screeched into the driveway. A young man and woman jumped out of the vehicle and ran down the side of the house into the backyard. The man screamed "What the F are you doing?" .... My volunteer said "We are just checking on your dog man" and as the guy pointed a gun at them he yelled " Don't move".... So of course as soon as they all saw the gun.... They started running.... AND THE MAN STARTED SHOOTING....Of course they called 911 and waited for the police.

When the police were told that we were just there checking on the condition and health of the dog, the police officer said something to the effect of "I have had dogs all my life. That dog is old and obviously in poor health. Just let it die."

THE FAMILY DOG

The family's dog was bought to guard,
Chained to a post in a chilly backyard,
House in a shed that was airless and dark,
And every few weeks had a run in the park.

When boredom set in with no fun and no work,
One day it broke loose and went quietly berserk,
Pa couldn't fathom just why it went wild,
As it flattened his wife and then bit his child.

The police were called in to sort out the mess,
And the whole sorry tale was revealed in the press,
The Rescue Society was really annoyed,
So, the dog was re-homed, and the owners destroyed.

CIRCUSES

*****************************************************************
Sink that hook into 'em...when you hear that screaming then you know you got their attention. ~Elephant Trainer for a circus
*****************************************************************

The Circus: Modern Day Slavery

When most people hear the word circus, they think of popcorn, candy, "wild" animals and fun. However, behind the glitter and the glitz of the circus lies a cruel world of animal suffering. The animals are unwilling participants in a show that jeopardizes their health, their mental well-being and their lives.

Circuses force animals to perform acts that have nothing to do with how these magnificent creatures behave in the wild. These unnatural acts range from a tiger jumping through a flaming hoop to bears riding bicycles. Animals are sometimes injured while performing; tigers have been burned jumping through a flaming hoop. Training animals to perform unnatural acts requires whips, tight collars, muzzles, electric prods and other tools. Anytime you see elephants, you will notice that circus employees nearby always hold an ankus (a wooden stick with a sharp, pointed hook at the end) to discourage undesired behavior. The ankus is embedded into the most sensitive areas of an elephant, such as around the feet, behind the ears, under the chin, inside the mouth and other locations around the face, and is sometimes used to smash animals across the face.

Lives of constant confinement and frustration of natural instincts force animals into a state of neurosis. Elephants constantly sway back and forth in their chains and the tigers constantly pace in their cages. These repetitive behaviors are symptoms of deep psychological distress. Elephants in the wild walk many miles a day and travel in groups. In the circus, these animals are chained by two legs, unable to take one step forward, except when performing. It is well known that elephants have a close family unit. However, in the circus these families are usually torn apart.

Animals in circuses do not provide a realistic educational tool for children because the animals are forced to perform tricks that are not normal to them. Children are seeing broken-spirited animals reacting to a stressful and unnatural environment.

Nothing made me sadder than seeing the faces of 2 or 3 lions at the Circus in Floriana, Malta, this morning, trying to walk outside their trailer in the tiny tarmac compound available to them, whilst passersby were gawking at them - fascinated by their dis-empowerment. Meanwhile, I was reading the lions' resignation and could see from their body language how they had gone long beyond despair, or any sense of hope. Just simple existence in incarceration, waiting until they breathed no more. So, so sad.  ~Jonathan Sorrell

DOG BITE/DEATH SENTENCE

**********************************************************************************
As a kid I was bitten by dogs. I thought nothing of it. My neighbor's dog bit me, my friend's dog bit me, my own dog bit me, and it never once occurred to me that there was anything wrong with that - dogs bite.  When I realized that dogs were often killed after biting a human being, I was horrified.  I never stopped being horrified.  ~Steve Markwell
**********************************************************************************

"FREE BRINDI" This dog must not be euthanized

Public safety is an important responsibility of local government, as is the judicious use of force.  In Halifax, Nova Scotia, animal control authorities customarily employ pre-emptive euthanization, a needless and injurious loss of life.

Brindi, a 5-year old mixed breed dog, has never bitten a person or seriously injured another dog. She is friendly and calm around people and likes the vast majority of dogs she meets. Found abandoned with 5 puppies, she waited 2 years in a shelter before owner Fracesca Rogier adopted her in 2007. Ms. Rogier had her microchipped, spayed and vaccinated. Brindi did very well in obedience class and obeys many commands. She loves her owner and is gentle and safe around infants, children and adults. She even lives peacefully with 2 cats.

Brindi was charged with a total of three offenses that were minor by any comparison. They happened when she accidentally got loose and ran up to dogs being walked along the road at her property line. Only the second offense resulted in an injury, a small tooth puncture requiring minimal vet care, for which Ms. Rogier voluntarily paid.  After this, the city issued a muzzle order. In Halifax By-Law A300, a muzzle order is one of six ways to deem a dog dangerous. The authorities construe this as a sanction for seizure and euthanization for any further violations. So, because she was not wearing her muzzle on the third offe they seized her without warning four days later, even though the other dog was not grabbed or injured.

Brindi still remains incarcerated at the SPCA-run city pound, even though the Supreme Court quashed the euthanization order on January 16, 2009. HRM refuses to release her to her rightful owner, Francesca. She was allowed a brief visit with Brindi for the first and only time in late December 2008. This visit had to be held outside in the freezing cold and only lasted 25 minutes.  No further visits are permitted.

This blanket imposition of the maximum penalty for minor offenses is unjust. Halifax has already recognized that Brindi is not a threat to humans. It was informed by two respected trainers that her wayward behavior does not signify aggression and definitely can be corrected. Yet the city prefers to have her pay the ultimate price for human error, rather than accept reasonable alternatives that would both maintain safety and keep her alive.

Clearly, Brindi does not deserve to die. Furthermore, she contributes significantly to the health and well-being of her owner, Ms. Rogier, much as a seeing-eye dog helps the blind.  Ms. Rogier is desperate to have her precious dog back. She has already built fenced enclosures attached to her home entrances, engaged a private trainer and  offered to pay all fines and costs.

We strongly oppose the euthanization of Brindi. We appeal to HRM Animal Services and the City Council to accept Ms. Rogier's reasonable and responsible offer so that Brindi can go home immediately.

UPDATE: Brindi is Home

Clayton American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bulldog Mix]Medium Adult Male

Tears of joy were shed when Clayton left on Christmas with his forever dad. Clayton, like many pit bulls was overlooked and was facing a gloomy Christmas and future. Followup emails with Clayton's new dad indicated Clayton was the "perfect fit".....all was well and a much needed happy tails - UNFORTUNATELY - this was not a happy tail!!

The worst nightmare for the shelter occurred today - a call from another shelter stating that they had Clayton and he was going to be euthanized due to his breed at the end of the day. This shelter is an hour away from SCAS and there was little chance that the ACO could get there before the shelter closed and Clayton would die. Luckily a volunteer was close to the shelter and literally pulled him minutes before he lost his life. Clayton was going to die because his owner did not want him and because of his breed not behavior.

Upon "investigation", Clayton was placed "for sale" on Craigslist less than 2 weeks after adoption and was "given away to someone". Four days after the Craigslist was posted, he was picked up as a stray. Due to the microchip, Clayton's "father" was contacted, but he did not followup and did not want the dog.

Clayton eagerly jumped into the "rescue" car and laid across the volunteer's lap. When he got back to SCAS, he eagerly greeted and licked the shelter cat and immediately went to the doors that led to the kennel runs. From there, he eagerly went back to the run where he had "lived" before. He knew he was safe and with people that loved him.

Clayton did not deserve to be sold like a piece of furniture. He did not deserve to be abandoned and left to run. He did not deserve to be at a shelter that was minutes away from euthanizing him due to breed.

DUMB EXCUSES FOR DUMPING ANIMALS

*****************************************************************
We don't think that people should be able to abuse animals like this. One minute, they'd say we're going to bring her back, then they'd say, oops, we're going to kill her... They are doing this because we think for a long time they've gotten away with treating people like this. ~Jean Kitchin

Oden was taken to a vet clinic to be euthanized. His "owner" met a woman with two children and she would not come to his house as long as the dog was there. Oden was well mannered, but the woman was adamant. The owner advertised Oden on craigslist with no luck. He felt the need to put Oden down and end his dilemma forever. A vet tech pleaded with this man not to kill his dog. He gave the vet tech one week to find a place for Oden to go. Adopted

http://www.petpopulation.org/topten.html

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are many reasons why people abandon their pets. Generally, it is not the fault of the dog or cat. Often the decision to take a pet to an animal shelter is based on convenience for the owner. It is representative of a society lacking strong values--everything is disposable, including pets. People are encouraged to use excuses for their own behavior--it always is someone else's fault. In this case, it's the dog's fault or the cat's fault!
Animals ARE NOT disposable items. They are alive, they feel pain, and they experience loss and sorrow. They bond with their humans and rely on them for food, shelter, and proper care. Adopting a cat, dog, or any other animal is a lifelong commitment.  It is a responsibility that should be undertaken with the knowledge that there are costs involved...including food, vet visits, and basic "upkeep".  Puppies and dogs need your time, attention and training just like children. Puppies chew and make messes. Dogs bark, shed, and require exercise. Cats need clean litter boxes and a place to scratch. Kittens and puppies become cats and dogs. Small puppies may become large dogs.
Owning an animal is a commitment for 10 to 15 years and should be a well thought out family decision based on a thorough investigation. Many of the dogs in shelters are housebroken, have some basic obedience, and are well-behaved, affectionate pets. Many of the cats are declawed and litter box trainerd. They have not abandoned their families--they are the victims.
There will be good days and bad days, so expect the unexpected and respond in an appropriate manner. If circumstances arise which require you to find another home for your animal companion, surrendering to a kill shelter should be your last resort. Most shelters and rescues will post a courtesy listing on their websites to help you find another home. Friends and family can network for you. Pet supply stores have bulletin boards for posting animals. Your vet may know someone looking for a new companion. If you are not a responsible human, don’t have money or time to spare, your living arrangements may change in the future, and/or you are unable to make a lifelong commitment, buy an inanimate object to amuse yourself and don’t adopt an animal whose life depends upon you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Most if not all shelters ask why you are giving up your pet. Statistically, the reasons are just as shallow as those listed below ~ HUMANS SHOULD BE ASHAMED!

1. AGGRESSION/BAD BEHAVIOR - A common reason that many pets are brought to a shelter is due to unwanted behavior problems that could have been prevented with early spay/neuter and some basic  training.  Dogs do what they are allowed to do and the easy way out becomes a fatal statistic!

* Dog dumped at shelter because he ate his owner's hearing aid.
*Four month old Blue Heeler turned in at shelter. The reason listed for relinquishment was 'separation anxiety, tearing up house'.
*Male Labrador/Beagle mix - weighs 33 lbs. The reason listed for relinquishment is "tough with other dog."
*Eight month old male Rottweiler mix. He weighs 55 lbs. Surrendered to shelter because he is  "tearing up landlord's house".
*Small Pekingese was brought to the shelter because he "growled at the grandkids when they pulled his tail."

*Great Dane surrendered because "not neutered and is too aggressive".

2. CHEWING

*3 year old Feist was brought to the shelter by a lady who had adopted him from another shelter and decided she didn't want him because, she said, "they didn't tell me he chews."
*Great Dane surrendered because "8 months old and destructive and chewed the couch."

3.  UNEXPECTED BIRTH

*Baby Labrador Retriever/Pit Bull Mixes 8 weeks old-Owner Surrender to shelter. Reason given: Unexpected Birth
*Dog surrendered because she "got pregnant."

*Cat surrendered to shelter because "she got herself pregnant."

4. ALLERGIC TO CAT/DOG

*Sweet, older calico girl who was surrendered by her owner because his new wife is allergic to cats.
*Dog surrendered to kill shelter because the owner "suddenly" developed allergies.
*13 year old unaltered male Jack Russell Terrier brought to animal clinic to be put down because "grandkids are allergic to him".
*Cat adopted from high kill shelter and then returned because "daughter's fiance was allergic."

5. UNWANTED GIFT

*Puppy turned in at kill shelter--He was a Christmas gift they did not want.

6. DOESN'T HUNT

*Small Female Beagle--brought into the shelter by her owner because he said she would not hunt.

7. NEEDS A BETTER HOME - The person who claims they have no time for their pet or everyone is at work or in school and the dog or cat needs more attention is foolishly reinforcing selfish, negative behavior by using that as an excuse. You can always make time for something you feel is important or special...an activity, a trip, a date...yet you can't make time to spend with a living creature who is in a situation you created! Let someone else do it! Well, not likely when they will be killed before you arrive back at your house after abandoning them at an animal shelter. These unwanted pets immediately go into competition with other animals in shelters waiting for a limited number of homes.

*Shepherd/Hound Mix was brought into very high kill shelter by her owner. They said she needed a home where she could play and run.
*Shepherd mix - reason given for relinquishment was "don't have the time to take care of her anymore."
*Small year old Lab mix turned in at shelter. Reason listed for relinquishment 'no yard, have to keep chained'.
*Six month old female black Labrador Retriever. The reason listed for relinquishment is "needs room to run".

8. DO NOT WANT - You have a dog or cat for years and then one day you decide you don't want him/her any more. One excuse: The pet belonged to a child who graduated high school and went off to college. These pets are invariably older and have no chance of ever leaving an animal shelter alive. Thanks for the years of patiently helping with homework, getting the teen through their inevitable hormone fluctuations, being there as a loyal friend when parents were not able to cope...It's off to college and off to the shelter. That will teach responsibility!

*15 year old cat surrendered to shelter because the owner/daughter went to college and the mother didn't  want the cat.
*Boxer mix girl - owner no longer wanted her.

*Beagle Mix and her two sisters were turned into the shelter by their 'owner' for the reason "they are females and I don't want any more puppies".

9. MOVING - No one moves suddenly. There is usually a reason for the move: pending foreclosure, new job in another town, upsizing/downsizing, and or a change in life style or personal relationship. Moving takes some thought and pre-planning, but at no time does the dog or cat receive even a moment's notice. You would be amazed at how easy it is to act responsibly, so the pet could move with the family or a suitable new home is found for the dog or cat. Moving out of town or to a new location does not automatically prevent a pet from being included. Dogs and cats are allowed in every state in America.

*A senior yellow Lab girl lost her home because her family moved. She was brought to the shelter with 3 cats.
*Dog surrendered to shelter because "we are moving immediately."

10. NEW BABY

*SWEET FRIENDLY small dog loses family due to new baby! Loves dogs, cats and children!
*Dog surrendered to shelter because "we are having a baby."

11. TOO ACTIVE

12. "ACCIDENTS" IN HOUSE

*Husky puppies brought to a kill shelter because they "peed on the carpet."
*15 year old cat surrendered to shelter because he has "litter box issues."
*Long haired Maine Coon Cat returned to shelter because of his long hair and occasional hairballs.

13. SIZE

*Great Danes surrendered because "they got too big!"
*Dogs turned in at kill shelters because they are larger or smaller than expected.
*Great Dane surrendered because "too much dog for the kids."

14. TOO EXPENSIVE

*Great Danes surrendered because they "cost too much to feed."
*Dog surrendered to kill shelter because "he is too expensive."
*Great Pyrenees surrendered to shelter--Owner couldn’t afford her any more.

15. AGE/ILLNESS

*Great Dane surrendered because "8 years old and dying of cancer."

16. BEING A PUPPY

*Puppy turned in at a kill shelter because "he is too playful."
*Puppy brought to the shelter because he was too active and wanted to jump around too much. This little guy was just 11-weeks-old and acted exactly like a little baby boy should.
*3 month old male black Labrador. The reason listed for relinquishment is "puppy chewing".
*Three month old Lab pup turned in at shelter and put on Euth list for biting.

17. CHANGE AT HOME - A divorce or break-up ranks high on the list of reasons to dump a pet. Every effort is made to share household belongings, including furniture and children, but the pet is abandoned. You're showing your children how easy it is to delegate their own responsibilities to someone else and that commitment is not something you value.

18. INCONVENIENCE - Ranking high on the list of cold-blooded, shallow excuses for abandoning a dog or cat is the family or individual who is going on vacation and does not want to pay a kennel to care for the pet. There are the people who abandon their pets at a boarding kennel, assuming that the kennel owner will be forced to take on the work of placement! That rarely happens and the animal is turned over to a shelter where he/she is euthanized.

*Dogs surrendered to shelter because "kids won't walk him/her."
*Labradoodle surrendered to shelter because "he sheds".
*Dogs surrendered to kill shelter because "don't have time for him/her".
*Woman turned her two cats in because the litter box smell bothered her and she just didn't want to clean it.

19. OWNER DIED/IS DYING - The death or illness of an owner is perhaps one of the most depressing reasons why dogs are sent to shelters. Animals have senses that humans cannot begin to understand--even their sense of smell is one thousand times more intense than our own. They know their owner is ill or has died and they need to have reassurance to help them through a period of mourning. Families divide the deceased's personal property and often fight over items having little, if any, value, but the dog or cat who was a source of love and companionship is discarded without a second thought. Every individual involved in rescue has seen dogs die of a broken heart--a fact that proves these animals are as sensitive, and in some cases, more sensitive than we are. A little estate planning can avoid these situations.

* Five year old female Belgian Sheepdog relinquished to shelter because her owner passed away.

20. TOO MANY ANIMALS

*Female Boxer mix - The reason listed for relinquishment is "too many animals".
*Seven pregnant dogs turned in at rural high kill shelter because the owner already had 40 dogs and didn't want more dogs.

I adopted your pet today...
the one you left at the pound;
the one you had for... ten years
and no longer wanted around.

I adopted your pet today...
Did you know that he's lost weight?
Did you know he's scared and depressed
and seems to have lost all faith?

I adopted your pet today...
He had fleas and a little cold;
Guess you don't care what shape he's in
— You abandoned him I am told.

I adopted your pet today...
Were you having a baby or moving away?
Did you suddenly develop allergies,
or was there NO reason he couldn't stay?

I adopted your pet today...
He doesn't play or even eat much;
I guess he's very sad inside and
it'll take time for him to trust.

I adopted your pet today...
and here he is going to stay;
He's found his FOREVER home
and a warm bed in which to lay.

I adopted your pet today...
and shall give him all that he will need
— patience, love, and security,
so he can forget your selfish deed."

EUTHANASIA

**********************************************************************************
I put the word 'euthanasia' in quotes because I don't believe that any such thing really exists. Euthanasia, according to the dictionary, is defined as "a pleasant death." There is nothing 'pleasant' about taking the life of a healthy, vibrant being. And I doubt very much that the animals being killed think that it's so pleasant.  ~Mark Whitt

FARM CRUELTY

**********************************************************************************
One robin caged and Heaven's mad! But when to just that one you add vast flocks of battered battery birds and half starved calves in crated herds and multitudes of tethered sows in narrow stalls - these horrors rouse all Heaven to a rage so wild it's former rage seems a wonderous mild.  ~Patrick Allen
**********************************************************************************

There is a vast difference between taking an animal for food and torturing it....If you respect nature and the earth, you understand that animals are our providers as is the earth; they feed us, they clothe us, they give beauty to our lives. Sadly, we treat animals as we do each other with no compassion and with a dollar mentality. As the apex predators it is our responsibility to take care of and respect this wonderful green mother of ours and all the wonderful living beings on it.

Plant, animal, all.

I wouldn't touch K.F.C. if someone offered me millions!...The meat packing business as well as many other businesses are corruptors and polluters and an abomination to me. Money is their god, pure and simple. Everything is seen as a means and money the final reward. Until humanity understands that money should be the tool to make the world a better place, nothing will change.

FERAL CATS

*****************************************************************
A Cat's Prayer--I ask for the privilege of not being born ... not to be born until you can assure me of a home and a master to protect me, and the right to live as long as I am physically able to enjoy life ... not to be born until my body is precious and men have ceased to exploit it because it is cheap and plentiful.  ~Author Unknown
*****************************************************************

A stray cat is not a feral cat. A stray is a cat who has been abandoned or who has strayed from home and become lost. Stray cats can usually be re-socialized and adopted.

A feral cat is an unsocialized cat. Either he was born outside and never lived with humans, or he is a house cat who has strayed from home and over time has become unsocialized to humans.

Feral cats should not be taken to local shelters to be adopted. Feral cats are not pet cats, and they will be killed at most shelters. Because they're unadoptable, they sometimes don't even make it to the shelter, but are killed in the animal control truck. Even no-kill shelters are unable to place feral cats in homes.

Feral Kittens can be adopted. Feral kittens can often be tamed and placed in homes, but they must be socialized in their first weeks of life. This is a critical window and if they aren't handled in time, they will remain feral and therefore unadoptable.

Feral cats can have about the same lifespan as pet cats. And they contract diseases at about the same low rate. The incidence of disease in feral cat colonies is no higher than among owned cats.

Feral cats are not the cause of wildlife depletion. Studies show that the overwhelming cause of wildlife depletion is destruction of natural habitat due to man made structures, chemical pollution, pesticides and drought - not feral cats.

Trap and remove doesn't work! Not only would you have to continue to remove cats, this process is extremely costly. Other cats simply move in to take advantage of the available resources and they breed prolifically, quickly forming a new colony. this "vacuum effect" is well documented.

Trap, neuter, and return does work. No more kittens. Their numbers gradually go down. The annoying behaviors of mating cats such as yowling or fighting stop. The cats are vaccinated and they are fed on a regular schedule. This ongoing care creates a safety net for both the cats and the community.

SUPPORT TRAP, NEUTER, AND RETURN.

The Ghost Cats by Will Stanton

I saw them first in back of the garage
A mother and two kittens, gaunt and wild,
Poised to run but hesitant,
As if they'd heard somewhere of friends.
I took a step--they disappeared
Behind some timber ends.
My wife said I'd been seeing ghosts,
Ghost cats that vanished into air.
They're real, I told her and half starved,
My son was there.
"Why can't we give them food?" he asked.
"It's not that hard to understand,"
I said, "we feed them and they'll stay,
And we have birds,
Some of them will eat out of my hand."
"Big deal," he said and walked away.
I started to reply--refrained.

Next day the cats were back.
I looked at them, they looked at me,
It rained.
I know a hunter who shoots cats
To save the birds--at least to save
The ones he wants to kill. It may be his
Solution is more humane than mine,
Softhearted friends tell me it is.
They say I could use traps--I know.
The thing I hate
Is using their first taste of human food
For bait.
I give humanity's good name
A higher mark than that
Deserved or not.

The next time that I saw the cats
I put our new refrigerator out of mind,
The coffee cream, the bowl of shrimp
and half a leg of lamb.
I looked for the unmotivated world they saw
without injustice, guilt, regret--where I
was no more than a man with a garage and they
A small cat family trying to get by.
And while I watched, a kitten reached a paw
Stretched out a paw to cuff a stick in play.
When I got back with food
The cats were gone. This time for good.

My wife was right. I can't deny
that I see ghosts. Although I say
A kitten's paw in times like ours
Is a small thing to be haunted by.
Yet in that world that little has in store
for cats but hunters, bird lovers and rain,
How could there ever be the heart for play?
Unless to say survival of the race
Is not enough,
That any life supposes something more
A certain cat-felt, cat-held thing called grace,
To live with which
Is what survival's for.

FREE TO GOOD HOME

A righteous man regards the life of his animal, But the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.  ~Proverbs 12:10
*****************************************************************

Murfreesboro, TN: OUTRAGEOUS! FREE with Sign on Front Lawn!!

Mom and her baby - Maggie is a 2 year old Lab and her baby boy. This is one of those emails that when I look at it I think, "This CANNOT be real...", but sadly, I believe it is.

Just UNBELIEVABLE how people will treat their animals - really burns me up!!  They even have scratched out their contact telephone numbers and basically are telling ANYBODY to just come and take them away - they don't care who it is or what they plan to do with/to the dogs.  AARGH!
   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please be aware of who you "give" your animals to. Please read the warning below. Please circulate this important information to help all the voiceless victims! If you doubt the validity of the term "Bunchers", please Google "bunchers animals laboratories" .
There are many reasons to not give an animal FREE TO A GOOD HOME. But this is the worst ending that can happen to an animal, in a laboratory!! ! This is important information to share with animal friends. It is hard to read, but please, please share with everyone. It is so important to get this information out to people with unwanted kittens, puppies and older pets!! Especially now, in this economy, animals are being abandoned and litters are being given away at huge numbers.
Animal Bunchers - This is absolutely one of the most valuable bits of info for those who care about animal... Please crosspost.
This is the "season of bunchers" - the unbelievably cruel people who travel, usually in vans or station wagons, and appear to be "family" - often with kids in tow. Spring is the most favored time of year for these bastards, however they will appear anytime of year that they have need of fresh stock. Their cache of animals back at the backyard or basement lab is now running low. They will cruise into an area and start with the local humane society and animal control facility, seeking free animals - knowing animal shelters are jammed up with animals this time of year. All too often the children traveling with the bunchers plead for a free puppy or kitten – and often it works. Next they look at the local newspaper and grocery store bulletin boards. They have been known to take abandoned animals "off the hands" of veterinarians who have had animals left at their facilities for nonpayment of the vet bill. They are looking for small animals, kittens, puppies, cats and small adult dogs. They are the 'Mom and Pop' backyard product testers. We call them Bunchers.
These folks are the ones who contract with major corporations, including bleach, detergent, dish soap, toilet cleaners, etc. If you are interested in a list of the corporations who use animals in their product testing, simply go to www.PETA.org. ; You will find a complete list there. Research animals, those poor beasts who are bred and raised for research, have a clear identity; their background including genetics is fully known, the vaccinations, if any, are known, and the test results are predictable. They are expensive to orations who manufacturer cosmetics, laundry products including bleach, detergent, dish soap, toilet cleaners, etc.  If you are interested in a list of the corporations who use animals in their product testing, simply go to www.PETA.org. ; You will find a complete list there. Research animals, those poor beasts who are bred and raised for research, have a clear identity; their background including genetics is fully known, the vaccinations, if any, are known, and the test results are predictable. They are expensive to raise and the growing public awareness of animal testing is pushing corporations to outsource the “testing” to the nonprofessional, inexpensive and readily available bunchers. The testers (or bunchers) could be your neighbors and, as the economy worsens, the numbers of bunchers/back yard testers can be expected to increase.
They carry out their horrific 'tests' on the animals they get from overburdened humane societies and animal control facilities - AND from well-intentioned folks who advertise "Free puppies (or kittens) to good home." While it is true that corporations, who still rely on animal testing for their products, maintain kennels for onsite testing, the trend has been to use the 'Mom and Pop' folks for the one-time testing, even though the test results are really meaningless since the history of these animals is unknown and their parentage (predisposition for certain traits), vaccination history and prior disease history are also unknown. They are animals of little value in the animal testing market but they are cheap to use and then simply dispose of. They serve the purpose of convincing the FDA that the product in question is "safe."
The message here is do not ever allow someone to take any animal from you personally or from an animal shelter or animal control facility unless you know for sure they intend to give the animal a permanent home as a loved and wanted pet. Bunchers are very crafty in their trade and know which areas in their locale are best for 'bunching' the animals they need to do their torturous experiments on. Two common examples are:
Blow torches are used on kitten’s paws to see which kind of salve will soothe the skin blisters and the crying - the exact amount of time this takes is then reported to the corporate testing lab. Photos are taken. The kittens are then suffocated, that being the easiest, cheapest and least bloody way to kill them. Results then pass on to the FDA.
Bleach is funneled into the stomach of dogs, and the dogs must be fully conscience so that gastric acid interaction with the chlorine can be fully realized. Often the dog's vocal cords are cut to eliminate the sounds of the agony. Again, the timing of the dog agony is noted, and then he/she is cut open (anesthesia is not given - or even considered) and the dog bleeds to death or dies from shock as his/her stomach is cut from its body to be turned inside out and examined for ruptures, boils, etc. Photos are taken and sent to the corporate lab for their research, and then on to the FDA.
The corporation of both the chlorine bleach and the salve can now say in bright, bold letters in their advertising that their products are "NEW AND IMPROVED" and the FDA smiles and nods in approval.
For those who care, beware of anyone who expresses an interest in kittens, puppies, cats and dogs that are not purebred. Bunchers want the castaway animals - they are cheap, usually healthier than purebred animals, have more "lasting power" and complain less [maybe they just never expected anymore from life]. Never, ever allow someone to take any animal unless and until their address, phone number, place of employment and family situation has been verified. It is horrific enough for animals in the care of shelters and animal control facilities to never leave these places alive - but to unwittingly deliver them into the hands of bunchers is to doom them to a hell only Satan himself deserves. It is far better to humanely euthanize an animal than to turn him/her over to bunchers. There are certainly others who fall into the list of animal torturers, but this activity is legal as long as it is contracted and the "laboratory"i s an extension of the corporate lab for which it operates. Remember: animals have no rights. Only the owner determines the quality of life of an animal.
There are of course many illegal animal torturers: Those who train dogs for fighting and greyhound racing come to mind, where kittens and puppies are routinely used as bait. But the level of cruelty that good and kindhearted people allow unwittingly to be put upon the most helpless and innocent among us is nothing less than appalling. It does matter to whom that helpless kitten goes. It is worth the time and effort to thoroughly check it out. And it is up to all of us who care to get this message out to everyone. When you see the ad in your local paper, “free puppies/kittens to good home” – for heaven’s sake call the number and warn the well-meaning folks of what can happen to those kittens/puppies. This is true for adult animals being given away as well. Demand that your local shelter and animal control facility implement serious mandatory rules and regulations that assure good quality homes for the animals they adopt out. Speak out. Stand up. Write letters to the editor of your local newspaper. Take the time to call in to your local call-in radio shows you listen to. Do for them what they can’t do for themselves.
Humane societies across the country need to seriously consider these facts when they elect to close their doors when there is 'no room at the Inn’ due to their "No Kill Shelter" status. There are fates far worse than death for far too many animals in our culture, and until such time as a good home can be promised to each and every pet animal in our country, we must accept the fact that all too often a peaceful and quiet death is the only answer. One may sleep nights after locking the doors on a No Kill shelter, but there are, guaranteed, thousands of animals in the custody of bunchers who got there because your shelter and others like yours turned them away - and they are not sleeping well at all.
List of USA Dog Dealers for Lab Experimentation
http://www.animalliberationfront.com/Practical/Shop--ToDo/Activism/ListOfDogBunchers.htm
We all know dogs or cats who were adopted from an animal shelter or rescued by a kind person. But some pets aren’t as fortunate and wind up in the terrifying world of “Class B” dealers, who buy up animals, transport them to holding facilities and then onto laboratories for use in harmful experiments in an often long and stressful journey.
There are currently seven active Class B dealers in the U.S. who round up thousands of dogs and cats each year and sell them to research facilities. They obtain these pets from flea markets, auctions, shelters, and other so-called "random sources," including from shady middle-men known as bunchers, who often resort to outright theft of pets and misrepresentation when responding to free-to-good-home ads.
Undercover investigations by animal protection organizations and inspections by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (which licenses Class B dealers) have revealed heartbreaking conditions at Class B dealer facilities, such as undernourished, sick dogs and cats living in filth amidst dead animals, receiving little if any veterinary care, and being abused by handlers.
GASSING SHELTERS
If gassing is too inhumane for child murderers and serial rapists then why is it acceptable for our innocent animals? We all know the answer - it is NOT acceptable and never will be on any level.  ~Unknown
Puppy (Davie) Survives Euthanasia By Gassing, and Trip To Dump
By Mike Gunning, Davie County Enterprise Record April 2005
When Jeff and Susan Armsworthy of Mocksville took their trash to the dump Saturday, they never expected to find a treasure in the dumpster. But that's exactly what they did. "I had backed my truck up, and was just finishing throwing the trash into the dumpster when we heard this noise," Armsworthy said. "I thought it was a toy at first." Armsworthy said he looked into the deep dumpster, and saw a load of black garbage bags under the trash he had just deposited. He said a few seconds later, he heard the sound again. "I thought the second time it was a puppy," Armsworthy said. "I thought, 'Lord, who could do something like that?'" Armsworthy said he jumped into the dumpster with his wife and a county employee and started digging through the trash searching for the source of the noise. Near the bottom of the dumpster they came across two large plastic bags . Thinking he had found the source, Armsworthy tore one open, only to have the carcass of a deceased female Rottweiler mix fall out. He almost stopped his search until they heard the noise again. "I tore open the second bag, and there they were. Three dead puppies, and one still wiggling," Armsworthy said. "It was all matted and nasty, but it was alive." Susan, who works at the Village Way Veterinary Hospital in Hillsdale, brought the animal to her job to be checked out by Dr. Beth Eubanks. With the exception of worms commonly found in puppies, Eubanks gave the puppy a clean bill of health. The puppy found its way into the dump by way of the Davie County Animal Shelter. Animal Control Officer Robert Cook said he was heart broken about the incident. The puppies, which were abandoned at the shelter the week before, were scheduled for euthanasia that morning. Apparently, one of the puppies, while knocked unconscious by the gas, didn’t inhale enough to be fatal. It appears to have become conscious while in the dumpster.  Thanks to Ginger Sprinkle  Davie's Law started here.
The Shame of Shelter Gas Chambers/One Anonymous Animal Control Officer's Comments or Perhaps a Good Writer's Thoughts
"Yes, I Gas Dogs and Cats for a Living. I'm an Animal Control officer in a very small town in central North Carolina. I'm in my mid thirties, and have been working for the town in different positions since high school. There is not much work here, and working for the county provides good pay and benefits for a person like me without a higher education. I'm the person you all write about how horrible I am.
I'm the one that gasses the dogs and cats and makes them suffer. I'm the one that pulls their dead corpses out smelling of Carbon Monoxide and throws them into green plastic bags. But I'm also the one that hates my job and hates what I have to do.
First off, all you people out there that judge me, don't. God is judging me, and I know I'm going to --heck--. Yes, I'm going to --heck--. I wont lie, it's despicable, cold, cruel and I feel like a serial killer. I'm not all to blame, if the law would mandate spay and neuter, lots of these dogs and cats wouldn't be here for me to gas. I'm the devil, I know it, but I want you people to see that there is another side to me the devil Gas Chamber man.
The shelter usually gasses on Friday morning. Friday's are the day that most people look forward to, this is the day that I hate, and wish that time will stand still on Thursday night. Thursday night, late, after nobody's around, my friend and I go through a fast food line, and buy 50 dollars worth of cheeseburgers and fries, and chicken. I'm not allowed to feed the dogs on Thursday, for I'm told that they will make a mess in the gas chamber, and why waste the food.
So, Thursday night, with the lights still closed, I go into the saddest room that anyone can every imagine, and let all the doomed dogs out out their cages.
I have never been bit, and in all my years doing this, the dogs have never fought over the food. My buddy and I, open each wrapper of cheeseburger and chicken sandwich, and feed them to the skinny, starving dogs. They swallow the food so fast, that I don't believe they even taste it. There tails are wagging, and some don't even go for the food, they roll on their backs wanting a scratch on their bellies. They start running, jumping and kissing me and my buddy. They go back to their food, and come back to us. All their eyes are on us with such trust and hope, and their tails wag so fast, that I have come out with black and blues on my thighs.. They devour the food, then it's time for them to devour some love and peace. My buddy and I sit down on the dirty, pee stained concrete floor, and we let the dogs jump on us. They lick us, they put their butts in the air to play, and they play with each other. Some lick each other, but most are glued on me and my buddy.
I look into the eyes of each dog. I give each dog a name.
They will not die without a name.
I give each dog 5 minutes of unconditional love and touch.
I talk to them, and tell them that I'm so sorry that tomorrow they will die a gruesome, long, torturous death at the hands of me in the gas chamber.
Some tilt their heads to try to understand.
I tell them, that they will be in a better place, and I beg them not to hate me.
I tell them that I know I'm going to --heck--, but they will all be playing with all the dogs and cats in heaven.
After about 30 minutes, I take each dog individually, into their feces filled concrete jail cell, and pet them and scratch them under their chins. Some give me their paw, and I just want to die. I just want to die. I close the jail cell on each dog, and ask them to forgive me. As my buddy and I are walking out, we watch as every dog is smiling at us and them don't even move their heads. They will sleep, with a full belly, and a false sense of security.
As we walk out of the doomed dog room, my buddy and I go to the cat room.
We take our box, and put the very friendly kittens and pregnant cats in our box.
The shelter doesn't keep tabs on the cats, like they do the dogs.
As I hand pick which cats are going to make it out, I feel like I'm playing God, deciding whose going to live and die. We take the cats into my truck, and put them on blankets in the back. Usually, as soon as we start to drive away, there are purring cats sitting on our necks or rubbing against us.My buddy and I take our one way two hour trip to a county that is very wealthy and they use injection to kill animals.
We go to exclusive neighborhoods, and let one or two cats out at a time.
They don't want to run, they want to stay with us. We shoo them away, which makes me feel sad. I tell them that these rich people will adopt them, and if worse comes to worse and they do get put down, they will be put down with a painless needle being cradled by a loving veterinarian. After the last cat is free, we drive back to our town.
It's about 5 in the morning now, about two hours until I have to gas my best friends. I go home, take a shower, take my 4 anti-anxiety pills and drive to work.. I don't eat, I can't eat. It's now time, to put these animals in the gas chamber. I put my ear plugs in, and when I go to the collect the dogs, the dogs are so excited to see me, that they jump up to kiss me and think they are going to play.
I put them in the rolling cage and take them to the gas chamber. They know. They just know. They can smell the death.. They can smell the fear. They start whimpering, the second I put them in the box. The boss tells me to squeeze in as many as I can to save on gas. He watches. He knows I hate him, he knows I hate my job. I do as I'm told. He watches until all the dogs, and cats (thrown in together) are fighting and screaming. The sounds is very muffled to me because of my ear plugs. He walks out, I turn the gas on, and walk out.
I walk out as fast as I can. I walk into the bathroom, and I take a pin and draw blood from my hand. Why? The pain and blood takes my brain off of what I just did.
In 40 minutes, I have to go back and unload the dead animals. I pray that none survived, which happens when I overstuff the chamber. I pull them out with thick gloves, and the smell of carbon monoxide makes me sick. So does the vomit and blood, and all the bowel movements. I pull them out, put them in plastic bags.
They are in heaven now, I tell myself. I then start cleaning up the mess, the mess, that YOU PEOPLE are creating by not spay or neutering your animals. The mess that YOU PEOPLE are creating by not demanding that a vet come in and do this humanely. You ARE THE TAXPAYERS, DEMAND that this practice STOP!
So, don't call me the monster, the devil, the gasser, call the politicians, the shelter directors, and the county people the devil. Heck, call the governor, tell him to make it stop.
As usual, I will take sleeping pills tonight to drown out the screams I heard in the past, before I discovered the ear plugs. I will jump and twitch in my sleep, and I believe I'm starting to hallucinate.
This is my life. Don't judge me. Believe me, I judge myself enough."
HOARDERS
**********************************************************************************
The more helpless the victim, the greater the crime!  ~Dr. Gerald Curtler
**********************************************************************************
Prisoners of Hoarding
"Hello, my name is Susie. I am a dog and I live in a house with fifty-six other canines of various breeds, sizes, and needs that are being ignored and neglected. We are all underweight, some of us are so matted, dirty and flea infested that sores have developed under our mats. My toenails are long and curled, making walking for me a painful chore. I have a special friend Bozo, whose eyes are runny and often stuck shut. I regularly need to clean them for him so he can see where he is going."
"We never seem to have enough food to fill our tummies more than halfway. Most days we drink from the toilet or the kitchen sink piled high with dishes and trash. Sometimes we go out to do our business but a lot of it is done right inside the house. It smells nasty in here even to us who are accustomed to sniffing butt."
"We are a pack but not all is well in our midst. Some of us do not like each other and competition for food scraps leads to a lot of noise and bloodletting on occasion. I hide in the closest corner when the rumpus begins. I'd rather be hungry than hurt someplace else on my body. Bozo never fights either he is my good buddy. Sometimes one of us dies and is eaten by one of the tough guys or just left behind the couch to rot and increase the already egregiously unsanitary conditions of our lives."
"You see, our caregiver is an animal hoarder. Although she says she loves us and is saving our lives, she fails to provide us with adequate food, water, sanitation, and veterinary care, and is in denial about her inability to provide this basic care."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

According to the Hoarding Animals Research Consortium, the following criteria are used to define animal hoarding: More than the typical number of companion animals, inability to provide even minimal standards of nutrition, sanitation, shelter and veterinary care, with this neglect often resulting in starvation, illness and death. Hoarders live in denial concerning their lack of resources to provide sufficient care and the impact of that failure on the animals, the household, the human occupants of the home and the surrounding neighbors.

Nearly 250,000 animals are victims of animal hoarding each year. This abuse differs from other types of animal cruelty in that the perpetrators don't always accept or recognize the cruelty they inflict on their animals. Rather, animal hoarders usually ardently believe they are saving or rescuing the animals they incarcerate. Animal hoarding is a symptom of psychological and neurological malfunctioning, which might involve dementia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

According to the Humane Society of the United State's website, they recommend that convicted animal hoarders be sentenced to mandatory psychological evaluation and treatment and that they be restricted to never owning more than two animals. They go on to say, "A lengthy probation period, during which the hoarder must agree to periodic unannounced visits from animal control to ensure compliance is vital. In cases where animal suffering is extreme (and depending on the mental and psychological capacity of the hoarder), we favor jail time, both as a punitive measure and to help hoarders understand the gravity of their actions."

This problem exists on farms, in secluded areas and in city neighborhoods even in those where homes range in the millions. So yes, it is everyone's responsibility to spot and report possible cases of this type of animal cruelty/neglect because it occurs in all of our backyards. Beaufort County is home to several types of animal abuse including hoarding. Hoarding is not limited to dogs. People hoard every type of animal and bird imaginable. Please call Animal Control at 946-4517 if you have your suspicions.

Animal cruelty is perpetrated by 77% male and 23% female offenders. Intentional abuse against animals is a 91% male, 9% female crime while neglect is a 60/40 split in favor of the female being the top wrongdoer. Again, females are the most often the prime offenders when it comes to hoarding….67%.

Note from Susie: "Thank heavens we were rescued when someone alerted the authorities to our plight. Some of us moved on to proper homes however, others of our pack were in such bad shape they could not be saved. Bozo and I have gone our separate ways to what I heard the nice shelter folks call forever families. Please be on the lookout for other situations like ours…they are everywhere!"

Belle~Sad~ Pit Bull Terrier Large Adult Female

Our hearts broke with the sight of this sad girl. Not only could we see the obvious physical wounds with infection and swelling from unknown causes, but it was obvious that this wonderfully sweet girl has been used for nothing but breeding her entire life. At only 2 years old it shows that she has had numerous litters of puppies. She was found abandoned in a ditch on the side of the road. With all of her wounds and health issues this lovely girl is concerned with nothing more than receiving love and attention. We hope that she does well and can recover at the shelter and be able to find a wonderful, loving home that she deserves more than anything else in the world.   No Update

He is so sweet and gentle. He has always been an outdoor 'hunting' dog. Doesn't this kind older gentleman deserve to spend his golden years with the love and respect that he has clearly never received from his people? Some say that the last years are the most important. He worked his entire life and then was discarded like garbage. The shelter named him Buddy. RESCUED

INVISIBLE FENCING

****************************************************************

Invisible fencing is not going to keep animals, or other threats out of your yard. If your dog runs through the barrier in pursuit of a critter, he's going to get corrected by that collar if he tries to get back. Please don't even think about installing this: especially for greyhounds.

Dimitri, a terrier mix, was placed in his yard with two other dogs. The yard was surrounded by an invisible fence. It is believed Dimitri was grabbed by a coyote who came onto the property. Dimitri was found an hour later, a couple hundred yards from home, in a wooded area. He had fought off the coyote and most likely tried to get home.  When found, Dimitri had numerous injuries and a temp of 94°F. Unfortunately, Dimitri lost his battle. In the end, his injuries were just too severe for his 15 year old body. It was subsequently discovered that the battery on his collar was dead, so, there was no issue with his getting back into the yard. His injuries were just too severe for him to make it back. Dimitri's family is devastated. They are kind, caring, and have rescued many dogs and cats from terrible situations. Dimitri was one of those: found wandering on the streets starving and hurt. This doctor nursed him back to health in her own clinic and then took him in for a wonderful life. This story is over. It was written in order to make people understand the dangers of electronic fencing.

KILL SHELTERS

*****************************************************************
We have a choice. We can fully, completely, and without reservation embrace No Kill as our future. Or we can continue to legitimize the two-pronged strategy of failure: adopt a few and kill the rest. It is a choice which history has thrown upon us. We are the generation that questioned the killing. We are the generation that has discovered how to stop it. Will we be the generation that does?  ~Nathan J. Winograd
*****************************************************************

For two weeks I and others posted a plea/cross-posted/begged for a heartworm positive mama dog and her babies at the McKamey Shelter in Chattanooga, TN. Then, she was given a few hours to live. People offered to sponsor Alexandra. Shortly before time ran out a rescue offered to take Alexandra and her babies. A confirmation voice mail stated "all the paper work was in order and they were ready to go".  That was Friday. Saturday Alexandra was euthanized---no phone call--no email. Yesterday this message was posted on Facebook.

Alexandra was euthanized. Someone wanted her. A family member, a precious creature that could be wanted, for the first time. Used as a vessel for 2 weeks? Planned? Stray hold is 3 to 5 days. Alexandra was kept alive until someone wanted her, and not just someone. No one wants a dog and she lingers in a confined world waiting for what comes next-will someone touch me today? Will anyone even notice me? Not adoptable. Who gives YOU the right to deem me adoptable? Old? Not a purebred? Mange? Maybe I looked at you the wrong way and didn't lick your feet. Maybe a lot of people have stopped doing it, as well. Why are "not adoptables" kept from the public and cannot be viewed as a family pet? Let's keep the amputees and disfigured out of public view, they may make people uncomfortable. Why do kill shelters kill in 5 days without giving chances? The old saying "it's what's on the inside that counts", does this apply to our narrow minded society, or should only the beautiful and healthy be kept alive? I believe we saw this in the 40's with Hitler. Who has the right to deem a life as "adoptable"--the one that's on the other side of the cage, that's who. Your efforts were not in vain.

Unfortunately, this kind of thing happens every day, everywhere!  It will continue until those who care speak up for those who are unable to speak for themselves. I am frustrated and angry that every day animals are dumped at shelters, abandoned, abused and euthanized because people are uncaring, irresponsible, and ignorant. I am tired of posting pleas for animals who were dumped at shelters for every stupid excuse imaginable--if the person even bothers to give an excuse. Euthanasia as animal control does not work. Until we change the mindset that everything is disposable and "they are only animals," the killing of healthy, adoptable animals and the killing of unadoptables who have offers of homes/rescue will continue.

I DIED TODAY

I died today. You got tired of me and took me to the shelter. They were overcrowded and I drew an unlucky number. I am in a black plastic bag in a landfill now. Some other puppy will get the barely used leash you left. My collar was dirty and too small, but the lady took it off before she sent me to the Rainbow Bridge .... Would I still be at home if I hadn’t chewed your shoe? I didn’t know what it was, but it was leather, and it was on the floor. I was just playing. You forgot to get puppy toys. Would I still be at home if I had been housebroken? Rubbing my nose in what I did only made me ashamed that I had to go at all. There are books and obedience teachers that would have taught you how to teach me to go to the door. Would I still be at home if I hadn’t brought fleas into the house? Without anti-flea medicine, I couldn’t get them off of me after you left me in the yard for days. Would I still be at home if I hadn’t barked? I was only saying, “I’m scared, I’m lonely, I’m here, I’m here! I want to be your best friend.” Would I still be at home if I had made you happy? Hitting me didn’t make me learn how. Would I still be at home if you had taken the time to care for me and to teach manners to me? You didn’t pay attention to me after the first week or so, but I spent all my time waiting for you to love me. I died today.   ~Love, Your Puppy

Nothing so endangers the fineness of the human heart as the possession of power over others: nothing so corrodes it as the callous or cruel exercise of that power: and the more helpless the creature over whom power is cruelly or callously exercised, the more the human heart is corroded.  ~John Galsworthy

5 MONTH OLD BULLDOG, BEATEN TO DEATH FOR URINATING ON CARPET - SIOUX CITY, IOWA

http://jodyewing.com/blog/2009/06/national-outrage-despite-witnesses-inadequate-charges-dog-killer-bobby-loggins-pleads-not-guilty/

His name was "Sire."

The five-month-old American Bulldog’s short life came to an abrupt end when he urinated on a carpet while his owner entertained friends.

Despite three witnesses who say otherwise, Sire's owner plead "not guilty" to having inflicted 30 blows to Sire's head, causing the puppy’s death. Even had the owner plead guilty, Iowa’s current animal cruelty/torture laws would have allowed no more than aggravated misdemeanor charges being filed in his case.

For many, the "not guilty" plea to the misdemeanor charge only added insult to injury.

Following a bench trial, the Judge found Sire's owner guilty and sentenced him to 365 days in jail, but suspended 335 days of that sentence and credited him for time already served. The owner will be on probation for 18 months upon his release.

"We must remember the victim herein was not a person," said the Judge.

Witnesses testified during the bench trial that the owner punched Sire numerous times in the face after he urinated on the dining room carpet at his home. The owner took the puppy outside, and when it returned, it was breathing hard, shaking and coughing up blood. The puppy died a short time later.

The Judge said he had considered the fact that the owner's prior history with law enforcement consisted of one minor drug possession conviction and traffic offenses. He said Iowa does not have a statewide problem with the crime of animal torture and that there is no evidence that the owner will commit similar violent acts against people.

In addition to jail time, the owner must pay a $625 fine and $300 to the Iowa Department of Corrections. He will also reimburse the Woodbury County Jail $50 for each day he is incarcerated.

XX URGENT: TIME IS UP FOR TOM TOM...POOR SENIOR BOY. This poor boy is bringing us all to tears!! Tom Tom is a 12 yr senior that was given up by his owners because they are MOVING! He is an AMAZING dog! His owners say he is great with everyone and he even loves other dogs and cats! Tom Tom is housebroken and he would make a loyal companion in his senior years. He needs a nice place to live out his life. Tom Tom does have a mass on his side, more likely than not, just a fatty tumor. NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS

**********************************************************************************
Beware of armchair 'animal rights or welfare' societies! Anyone can become a 'nonprofit' society, make occasional mailings of heart-rending pictures and just wait for the contributions to shower in... It takes a genuine animal person or group to devote maximum time, hard work and money towards the total liberation of all animals, including doing 'dirty work' when needed and refraining from any and all use of animals and their products, even compassion for insects, etc. too! Contribute only to those who, in your conscience, qualify!!! AND... there are thousands of effective things we can do for the animal cause with little or no money - alone or with others!!!' ~Adela P.
**********************************************************************************

Oreo was a young female dog who was thrown off the roof of a six story building in Brooklyn, New York. She survived despite massive injuries to her legs, ribs and internal organs. She was dubbed the "miracle dog" by press and the ASPCA, who nursed her back to health.

On November 13, 2009, Oreo ran out of luck and the ASPCA decided unilaterally that she was not a good candidate for adoption. Before she was killed, numerous animal protection activists advocated saving her life. A reputable New York No Kill sanctuary, Pets Alive, offered to take her. Despite all attempts to save her life, Oreo was killed by the ASPCA.

This has led New York Assembly Member Micah Z. Kellner and Senator Thomas K. Duane to introduce "Oreo’s Law". Oreo’s Law will grant legitimate animal protection organizations the right to request that healthy and treatable animals be transferred to their care when another shelter is planning on killing them.

NO KILL NATION

**********************************************************************************

Let’s be clear: we are not killing homeless animals because they are homeless. We are not killing them because their population has exceeded available space in the pounds. We are not killing them because we have not instituted the proper programs and protocols. We are killing them for one reason: because they are not human. ~Tina Clark
**********************************************************************************

The Luxury of the No-Kill Nation Concept

I can't imagine that there is anyone who would not like to see a no-kill nation, but there are very real issues which need to be tackled before we can achieve that. I feel like the concept of "no-kill" serves to polarize the animal welfare community and provides plenty of opportunity to point fingers at each other.

If we are honest with ourselves about the current situation in the US (and many other countries), we will realize that the luxury of calling one's shelter "no-kill" is available only because other shelters are taking in every animal that comes through the doors and because other shelters are euthanizing the animals that no-kill shelters turn away because they have no space or because they believe the animals are "unadoptable."

Why do we waste time labeling ourselves as "the good" and "the bad." Isn't that entirely unproductive? We could instead be spending our time discussing how to increase the save rates at ALL shelters across the United States. We could instead be organizing fiercely at the local and state levels where we can really make a difference on legislation. We could instead be educating children and adults in our communities on responsible pet ownership. We could instead spend our Saturdays organizing and volunteering at free and low-cost spay/neuter clinics.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves in the animal welfare community.

Let's get rid of the labels and the polarization, and let's come up with some real solutions that will work in our own local communities. Let's use ALL the resources available to us from ALL the groups out there working on animal welfare issues, and let's pick and choose what we can make work. What works in rural Kentucky might not work in New York City or Tucson, Arizona. This is yet another reason why I believe we could do so much more if we really focused our efforts locally and did as much as we could in our own little corners of the planet.

There are many tangible solutions out there, and Nathan Winograd offers some great ideas. I love his concept that shelter workers should be fired if they are not finding homes for animals, for example. It's worth reading his two books and/or his blog, but I don't think it's worth clinging so tightly to the concept of "no-kill nation" that we fail to see the reality in front of us.

Talk is cheap. Actions speak louder than words.

OVERPOPULATION

*****************************************************************
The "overpopulation crisis" doesn't exist. And even if it did, it wouldn't justify killing animals. It would justify building more shelters, encouraging more people to adopt rather than buy, changing the laws, or doing other things to stop so-called overpopulation. To make this point more salient, say there was an overpopulation crisis among humans. Would that justify killing homeless humans? No, it would not. ~ Eccentric Vegan

TRIBUTE TO TRAVELER

Adopt Traveler 12 URGENT, a Black Labrador Retriever at Trumbull County Dog Kennel in Warren, OH. I am a very shy guy in kennel 12, available for rescue/adoption. I am about 2 yrs old. Please help me out of here...they say black dogs don't get adopted...Euthanized

Traveler was gassed to death, put in the kill shelter because his owners didn't want to play with him anymore. If you'd like an animal companion, know that it's a lifelong commitment, NOT a toy. Animals are emotional, sentient beings. If you are ready, PLEASE ADOPT. Millions of innocent, healthy, wonderful animals die every year, while people still shop at pet stores and breeders. Rest in peace, Traveler. EUTHANIZED

Letter from a Shelter Manager

I think our society needs a huge "Wake-up" call. As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all...a view from the inside if you will.

First off, all of you breeders/sellers should be made to work in the "back" of an animal shelter for just one day. Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would change your mind about breeding and selling to people you don't even know.

That puppy you just sold will most likely end up in my shelter when it's not a cute little puppy anymore. So how would you feel if you knew that there's about a 90% chance that dog will never walk out of the shelter it is going to be dumped at? Purebred or not! About 50% of all of the dogs that are "owner surrenders" or "strays", that come into my shelter are purebred dogs.

The most common excuses I hear are; "We are moving and we can't take our dog (or cat)." Really? Where are you moving too that doesn't allow pets? Or they say "The dog got bigger than we thought it would". How big did you think a German Shepherd would get? "We don't have time for her". Really? I work a 10-12 hour day and still have time for my 6 dogs! "She's tearing up our yard". How about making her a part of your family? They always tell me "We just don't want to have to stress about finding a place for her we know she'll get adopted, she's a good dog".

Odds are your pet won't get adopted & how stressful do you think being in a shelter is? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off. Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn't full and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies. Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with about 25 other barking or crying animals. It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps. It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that abandoned it. If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk. If I don't, your pet won't get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of its pen with a high-powered hose. If your dog is big, black or any of the "Bully" breeds (pit bull, rottie, mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked it through the front door.

Those dogs just don't get adopted. It doesn't matter how 'sweet' or 'well behaved' they are.

If your dog doesn't get adopted within its 72 hours and the shelter is full, it will be destroyed. If the shelter isn't full and your dog is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long . Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment. If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles chances are it will get kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be destroyed because shelters just don't have the funds to pay for even a $100 treatment.

Here's a little euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being "put-down".

First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk happy, wagging their tails. Until they get to "The Room", every one of them freaks out and puts on the brakes when we get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there, it's strange, but it happens with every one of them. Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 vet techs depending on the size and how freaked out they are. Then a euthanasia tech or a vet will start the process. They will find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the "pink stuff". Hopefully your pet doesn't panic from being restrained and jerk. I've seen the needles tear out of a leg and been covered with the resulting blood and been deafened by the yelps and screams. They all don't just "go to sleep", sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves.

When it all ends, your pets corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back with all of the other animals that were killed waiting to be picked up like garbage. What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Rendered into pet food? You'll never know and it probably won't even cross your mind. It was just an animal and you can always buy another one, right?

I hope that those of you that have read this are bawling your eyes out and can't get the pictures out of your head I deal with everyday on the way home from work.

I hate my job, I hate that it exists & I hate that it will always be there unless you people make some changes and realize that the lives you are affecting go much farther than the pets you dump at a shelter.

Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters and only you can stop it. I do my best to save every life I can but rescues are always full, and there are more animals coming in every day than there are homes.

My point to all of this DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PETS DIE!

Hate me if you want to. The truth hurts and reality is what it is. I just hope I maybe changed one persons mind about breeding their dog, taking their loving pet to a shelter, or buying a dog. I hope that someone will walk into my shelter and say "I saw this and it made me want to adopt". THAT WOULD MAKE IT WORTH IT.

PREGNANT DOGS/CATS IN SHELTERS

**********************************************************************************
With all of the animals running around maybe we'd finally see laws passed requiring people to spay or neuter their pets. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll see any laws come into place until society is inconvenienced enough to demand them. **HER NAME WAS ROSIE...

Yesterday was a profoundly sad day for Rosie, and on a larger scale, the world of animal rescue, what Rosie's death exemplifies. The slaughter of innocents across this country every single day, rescuers and well-intentioned folks working feverishly to pull as many as possible to safety, not enough "front-end" intervention to interrupt the over-population, desperation, hopelessness, "no-kill" mostly a concept, not a way of doing business. Senseless death, never ending.

Why is no-kill not an ingrained national attitude, a full-fledged, dedicated movement?

The innocents have faces. Like Rosie.

A desperate plea came through channels yesterday:

Tarboro, NC ~ URGENT ~ Edgecombe County Animal Shelter-ROTT PUPS & LAB PUPS!!

The word "County" in the subject line ran instant alarm bells: The forgotten back alleys of civilization. Out in the country, lawlessness, recklessness, animal abuse, animals dumped, backwards ways of thinking, red necks, animals starving, dogs chained, unaltered. Animal control has only one function: dispose of unwanted animals, Method: gas chambers or other cruel, inhumane kill methods. Few, if any, get out alive.

The euth date was stated as yesterday and today. The time of the plea for help was sent around 3:00pm.

Among those pictured was a very, very pregnant medium sized dog. She looked like she was about to go into labor, so far along she was. From the picture, it looked like she was wagging her tail, but her face pleaded. It looked like she had not had it easy in her life, her backbones and hip bones protruding.

I immediately put forth an urgent request for help for the momma dog. Beautiful little girl, light tan with white. Oh, how cute she must have been as a puppy.... I received his plea around 3:30 eastern time. I called the shelter, miraculously getting through even though shelter hours are only until 11 am. The guy who answered did not know who I was referring to. Further detail offered. Long pause. Oh, ... she's gone...

I could not breathe. Then, a silent scream that will last for all eternity. Nooooooooooo,.....! Time stood, as I saw her pleading eyes, her unborn babies, ... then her lifeless body, her babies, unborn, or perhaps born as a result of forced labor upon her death. I know her babies did not die right away... Inhumane at the most reprehensible level.

Her "crimes": unwanted and pregnant.

Man's crime: murder.

Rosie, I whispered,.... your name is Rosie. You will always reside in our hearts, minds and souls. You and your babies will never be forgotten.

~Monique Williams

Even though I'm gone now I'd like you to remember that what you did for me was amazing; it was powerful and true. The last thing I'd like to say will stand always and forever... Thank you for all you did for me, and for my friends, what you do.

PUPPY MILLS

A little about Little Tag 19

Sadly, Mariah left this earthly world at the young age of 21 in May 2007. Along with her paw prints on our hearts, she left a legacy. Her Legacy. This miniature dachshund had been through so much before rescue…her head had been permanently marked with a branding iron, her little ears had notches in them from metal livestock tags, and her legs were forever crippled from living on wire in the mills for so many years.

Mariah never knew that she wasn’t a dachshund show dog. She took pain pills when her legs were so bad that she couldn’t walk. She had no idea her head was any different with the brand. Her notched ears were perfectly normal, as far as she was concerned. To herself and us, she was the perfect dachshund.

The story of Tag 19 is not meant to upset or to point fingers at anyone in particular. It was written from Mariah's eyes to make the unknowing public aware of the life and, sometimes, possible rescue of the puppy mill dogs. Thousands are never rescued and spend their entire lives as breeders.

Mariah asked that you USE what you might learn from her story to enlighten others about puppy mills. Help Mariah’s Legacy live on by spreading the word. Help us give the puppy mill dogs their freedom! They so deserve to be in a home as someone’s "pet" and not in a mill used as someone’s "production line."

Dear Neighbors,

      During any given year, over 6 million dogs and cats (more than the entire human population of Missouri) enter shelters and become homeless.  Over 50% of them are euthanized due to overcrowding or health issues related to abuse and neglect.  The sad animals you see in the t.v. commercials, which are so difficult to watch, are real.  Those animals, and many more like them, really do exist.  I know, because I spend much of my time as an animal rescue shelter volunteer and see the abused and abandoned animals first hand.  All are scared, many are traumatized and must be taught to trust.

        Purchasing from a pet shop or even from a reputable breeder takes homes away from shelter animals, and perpetuates the use of animals for profit.  When a dog is purchased from a pet shop the transaction keeps an animal abuser in business, as most pet shops get their puppies from puppy mills.   Puppy mills are businesses specifically created to breed puppies for sale.  Unfortunately, the breeder animals spend their entire lives in small cages, often lying in their own waste.  They never receive any affection.  They are never allowed to walk outside their small cages (except to breed).  They are never allowed to play, and most don’t even know how.  They are only fed enough to allow them to continue breeding.  They are matted, filthy, lonely, hungry, scared, depressed and usually sick.  They have been emotionally and physically abused and neglected.  Their living conditions are deplorable and when they can no longer breed, they are killed. If you were to see the condition of just one of these animals when it is rescued from a puppy mill, your life would never be the same.  So if you plan on purchasing that happy little puppy from a pet shop, keep in mind that you will be leaving it’s parents behind to be abused, and then perpetuating their misery by putting more money and more motivation into the pocket of the abuser.  The highest concentration of puppy mills is in Missouri and in Lancaster, Pennsylvania (Google “Amish  animal abuse” and “Amish puppy mills”.  Isn’t it time we stop using animals to fill our pockets with cash, or to satisfy our egos?

      There is a rescue group for just about every breed (and species) of animal you can think of, and a good amount of animals in shelters are pedigreed.  You need only to know the traits of the breed you are looking into to be sure it is a good fit with your family, and so will stay for a lifetime.  The shelter staff can help with that.

This letter is intended only to help raise awareness.  If you care about animals at all, here are some things you can do to help:

1. Don’t breed animals for fun or profit.  Remember there is no need to breed.

2. Don’t buy animals from pet shops or breeders (including on-line breeders).

3. Do please adopt a shelter or rescued animal (www.petfinder.com is for rescue group animals only)

4. Donate to a shelter or rescue group if you can (cash, blankets, towels, food, pet toys).

5. Donate pet food to a local food bank.  Many food bank patrons have pets that are in need too.

6. Volunteer your time to a shelter or rescue group.  The animals need love, affection and fun!

7. Spay and neuter your pets so the population doesn’t increase even more.

8.  Know that animal hoarding is not love.  Take an animal only if you can give it a proper home.

9. Remember that animals feel, even though they can’t cry or express in words.

10· Remember that animals are like toddlers.  They need our help to survive, and they need love.

11. Speak up, be a Voice and a defender for the animals.  Share this letter.  Teach empathy.

Thank you for caring.
When we know better, we do better!

Kathleen Fitzgerald

Foot Note:  In my distribution of this letter so far, I have found that the only people who are less than pleased with it, not surprisingly, are those that breed animals for profit.  If you are a breeder and intend to respond negatively to this letter, or try to convince me that what you do is warranted while there are over SIX MILLION homeless animals, please don't waste your time or mine.  I've heard it all before and in fact, it's part of the reason why I created my letter.  Criticisms will no longer be even politely considered, and my only response will be that you find another way to make money.  Thank you.

So here's a breeder story for you. I am at the vet getting that last minute health cert when in comes an emergency, a little one pound chi pup who stopped eating and drinking the day before and is covered with fleas and full of worms. Recently purchased from a breeder/puppy mill it turns out. The little pup is nonresponsive and while the vet tries to get her warmed up, and fluids into her and all the ER care, pup breathes her last breath. So CPR is performed and she is intubated and after a long while, with her heartbeat growing stronger, she begins to breathe on her own. We all wait and pray she makes it and at last she is responsive again and yelping. HOORAY. The vet gives her an exam and thinks she might have suffered some brain damage due to lack of oxygen and I think, okay, but she's alive and you never know. Meanwhile she's yipping and wondering where she is. So the vet is on and off the phone with the owner and finally comes in and says the owner wants her euthanized. Seriously? Yep seriously...her owner doesn't want her bringing home worms or worse to her other unvetted dog. We all watch in disbelief as the needle is prepared and the little one is quickly dispatched. The vet just says "I hate people". I keep thinking of the look in that pup's eyes when I told her someone out there would want her no matter what. RIP little puppy mill baby...in my heart.  ~Becca Martin

RESCUES

*****************************************************************
And let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we shall reap if we do not grow weary. ~Galations 6:9
*****************************************************************

OH: ANOTHER RESCUE BUSTED FOR CRUELTY - 162 dogs, 2 horses, 18 cats and an uncounted number of ducks, geese and chickens

"Good intentions gone bad" is sadly common in rescue.  Just because you "save" an animal from the needle doesn't mean you are doing it any favors. The dead animals at this place would have been much better off being humanely euthanized rather than the horrible deaths they probably suffered. And the ones who do live have a long road to recovery. Obviously SOMEONE, probably more than one person, was sending this person dogs (and cats & roosters, chickens, ducks, etc.)

Check the place out BEFORE you send an animal to any place or at least call the local animal control. If you don't feel comfortable, don't take the animal out there. Death by humane euthanasia is not the worst thing that can happen to an animal.  I do not believe these people were "bad" people, I doubt their goal was to abuse animals. They just took on way more than they can handle, which I will say again is COMMON in the rescue world.

Floppy's story

It is with great sadness that I share this story with you.

About I dog I never met...a dog I never knew other than through her shelter picture.

Just one dog...Floppy's story
  http://blip.tv/file/3391959

It is eleven minutes long but there is a rescue message here that is important.

Floppy deserves her story to be told.

And I ask all of the rescuers in Los Angeles who passed Floppy around like this, to please question why it is you are not taking an interest in whom or where you send animals to?  We have animal brokers right here in California that rescuers are currently willingly supplying a steady flow of animals to.  No home checks, no adoption screening process, no follow up, animals are not getting vetted, being sold to the first person with cash.  This goes on here in our own state, yet rescuers continue to hand over dogs to unchecked "rescues" and then drop the ball, no follow up, nothing.

I ask why you are still supplying animals to anyone, no follow ups?  Floppy's Los Angeles rescuers should have been following her trail, they should have been phoning her "rescuer's" vet to confirm that Floppy was getting the medical that she needed. They should have found local people in Canada to go and check up in person to see the condition of all of the dogs they were sending to her.

It takes some time, some effort, many phone calls and yes, it is a pain in the you-know-what to be this thorough. Many of us work full time jobs, yet we make the time for this important and crucial part of animal rescue...following through to ensure the safety and ultimate fate of every animal we are assisting in rescuing.

The animals are depending on us to make the effort. They have no choice, where they end up is our responsibility. Anyone who is along the trail of a rescued animal is responsible for what becomes of that animal. Even if you are only pulling dogs or transporting or donating. Follow up, phone the vet to see where your donation is being used, ask to see vet receipts. An animal broker will be offended by these types of checking up. Authentic animal rescuers will welcome this and be as transparent as possible.

I hope this rescue message can help everyone to think about their rescue practices and ask themselves how many dogs like Floppy continue to fall through the cracks every day because rescuers along the journey are not taking an interest in what becomes of the animals.

Wherever Floppy is right now, I hope she knows that her suffering is not going to be forgotten.

~Cathy Stanley  Camp Cocker

We would die if not for you.

The Reason (to you from all your rescue dogs)

I would've died that day if not for you.
I would've given up on life if not for your kind eyes.
I would've used my teeth in fear if not for your gentle hands.
I would have left this life believing that all humans don't care
Believing there is no such thing as fur that isn't matted
skin that isn't flea bitten
good food and enough of it
beds to sleep on
someone to love me
to show me I deserve love just because I exist.
Your kind eyes, your loving smile, your gentle hands
Your big heart saved me...

You saved me from the terror of the pound,
Soothing away the memories of my old life.
You have taught me what it means to be loved.
I have seen you do the same for other dogs like me.
I have heard you ask yourself in times of despair
Why you do it
When there is no more money, no more room, no more homes
You open your heart a little bigger, stretch the money a little tighter
Make just a little more room...to save one more like me.
I tell you with the gratitude and love that shines in my eyes
In the best way I know how
Reminding you why you go on trying.

I am the reason
The dogs before me are the reason
As are the ones who come after.
Our lives would've been wasted, our love never given
We would die if not for you.

RE: ROBESON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER
St. Pauls, NC

Website: http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/NC523.html

Today could have been a great day of hope at Robeson. Four different rescue groups from out of state arrived at the shelter to rescue dogs and cats. Groups from as far away as Minnesota and New York drove and flew to Robeson County to rescue dogs.

Today could have been a great day of hope at Robeson. These groups all had lists of dogs to save. But the first two groups to arrive were met with a shot. They had received confirmation that the petfinder page was up to date as of Saturday night. They had received this information from the Saturday shelter volunteer. The shelter was closed all weekend from Saturday at 12pm until this morning when those two volunteers walked in. Do you know what they found? MULTIPLE LISTED DOGS WERE GONE.

Today could have been a great day of hope at Robeson. These rescues wanted to save "Mini and the Gang" and "the totally adorable puppies." These poor dogs were dumped at the shelter. Just a few weeks old, their futures looked bright. They had caught the attention of some amazing rescue groups! The Robeson shelter said NO when the rescue groups asked to take them. These poor souls. So close to being saved! And the horrible people who run the shelter must have been sad thinking they would have no one to kill in the morning. So they said NO.

You ask, why the Robeson shelter? Why is it getting this attention? It's because your shelter is one of the most inhumane places on earth. To rescuers all over the country, the people running your shelter sound worse than demons. They sound ungodly. They are horrible people who torture animals and keep them from finding homes. This is why people run, fly and drive from across the country to save poor, helpless animals from a cold and horrible fate.

Today could have been a great day of hope at Robeson. But for some, the shelter manager and staff kept it from being so.

To those lost souls who saw a glimmer of hope today… and then saw hell stand in front of them… I cry for you.

Shame on you. I hope someone has contacted your superior and the media. I hope you let those voiceless puppies have a chance at a life. You will be judged by someone more powerful than I. But if I can stop you from judging these animals who have no voice, I will. I hope those rescue groups stay there and fight the good fight for those dogs! I hope you learn from their passion what it's like to care.

~Amy Lacy

CLOSURE

Those of us who spend countless hours each day and each week sharing, posting and cross-posting to expose the urgency of the dire plight of these pet's situation - through NO fault of their own, NEED to have closure on the animals we spend so much time networking. We share and cross-post numerous times for each animal and we feel a connection with these precious creatures. We don't just click "Share" and don't give them another thought; we think of them each and every day and as we try to fall asleep at night their images are the ones we see before finally drifting off to sleep, only to have their pleading, soulful eyes haunt us in our dreams.

NO, we don't and CAN'T forget them, and they stay in our minds and in our hearts until we know they are safe. And for the ones who aren't lucky enough to make it out alive and find their rescue angel or furever home.....they never leave us and it is for them that we continue to do what we do, as heartbreaking as it all too often is. So, YES, we need to have these updates; as upsetting and disturbing as they may be.

But, what is even MORE UPSETTING AND DISTURBING is that these precious innocent souls end up in these Hell holes in the first place! The more eyeballs that see what is really going on - the good and the evil, the happily-ever-after and those that never get their happy endings, the MORE precious innocent lives can be SAVED! We CANNOT filter out ONLY the happy endings and pretend they will all be saved.

SENIOR DOGS & CATS

*****************************************************************
Blessed is the person that has earned the love of an old dog.  ~ Sydney Jeanne Seward
*****************************************************************

Sally~15 years!  Beagle Medium Senior Female Dog

There are some dogs that just pull at your heartstrings more than others, and Sally is one of those. Sally was here at the shelter for months and when she finally got adopted we thought that she had finally gotten her big break. Then, last week Sally was returned…not to our shelter where there were people who knew her and loved her. She was surrendered to a HIGH KILL shelter in a different county where she would have been euthanized if they hadn’t scanned her and realized that she was microchipped here. Now Sally is back and up for adoption again. A girl her age deserves to be spending her golden years on a soft bed in front of a fireplace…not cold and lonely behind kennel bars. Sally has the sweet mellowness of an old gal, but she still has the heart of a puppy. She is housebroken, great with other animals, and very eager to please. There’s nothing sadder than a dog who has lived its whole life without love…except one who ends it that way. ADOPTED

Here are five reasons why we should think about adopting an older dog:

1. Older dogs are wiser and calmer. They will more than likely slot into your environment and bond with you on a mature level, unlike young puppies that can cause mischief and become slightly out of control if restless.  An older dog knows how to sit still where as a puppy simply chooses to do what it wants-when it wants.

2. Senior pets tend to appreciate the love and care of their owner and the fact that they have been given a second chance of happiness. Older pets in a shelter may suffer from depression. This is your chance to give them joy, and to get that joy back tenfold.

3. Although older dogs may have health problems, they do not generally require as much attention and care from you as they start to wind down in their old age. A shorter walk in the woods becomes more preferred than a two hour jog around the fields.

4. Older dogs are often trained to follow commands and are usually housebroken.

5. Older dogs are easy to assess for behavior and temperament.

"Five million dogs and cats are killed yearly in U.S. shelters and it's the older generation that goes first."

 Please give an older dog a chance, you won't regret it.

SHELTER ABUSE

*****************************************************************

Deliberate cruelty to our defenseless and beautiful little cousins is surely one  of the meanest and most detestable vices of which a human being can be guilty.  ~William Ralph Inge

*****************************************************************

Memphis, TN: A stray that was starved yet able to walk taken to the kill room at Memphis Animal Shelter. How do the people who work at this shelter even sleep at night?!?! Poor, poor angel no doubt walked to that room thinking he/she was being saved!  Born to suffer then die! Why? What's the purpose? This is a horrible reflection on mankind! None of the strays at MAS get listed for adoption or can even be viewed by the public.

TO STOP THIS CONTINUED ABUSE the target must be the specifically named governing body, officials, etc. For example: The governor of Tennessee, the mayor of Memphis, county officials and others who can bring about change. CONTACT THEM!

SPECIAL NEEDS ANIMALS

You don't throw a whole life away just because it's banged up a little.  ~from the movie "Seabiscuit"
**********************************************************************************

This unnamed red female adult Dachshund was a stray at Animal Metro Services in Louisville, KY. She had a broken back. She was seen by a vet and X-rays were taken which confirmed her back was broken. The vet said that she was not in pain, she just couldn't walk. She dragged her legs, but she was super friendly, loved to be held, and gave kisses. A volunteer at the shelter sent out a plea for someone to help.  She was still in her stray hold period. The volunteer emphasized that time was of the essence.

Someone in Columbus, OH offered to take this little girl and another person offered to donate a doggie wheelchair. Unfortunately, the call to help came too late. The shelter decided to put her down early.  Euthanized.

STRAY DOGS

**********************************************************************************
For every animal that dies in a shelter, there is a HUMAN somewhere RESPONSIBLE for its death.  ~Unknown
**********************************************************************************

You Aren't Looking for Them, But I Found Your Two Dogs

Sigh. No one is looking for these guys. And I see why. They hump everything in sight, try to dominate our old doggies, try to eat our cats and pee on everything and bark at everything. Neurotic, lick constantly. They know no commands, either in English or Spanish. They are aggressive and probably lived in a puppy mill. You dumped them, probably, and we picked them up before they were killed by traffic. Unneutered, no tags, under 1 year old small males. I hate you, person who dumped these dogs. There are no lost ads on phone poles, no lost ad on Craig's list, no lost ad in the paper. We put signs up all over, put a found notice in at the local pounds and if you were looking for these filthy little ragamuffins, you would have found them. We are afraid to take them to the pound because under stress, your dogs were snappy and horribly afraid and dogs are judged by temperament for adoption placement. They would not have passed that test. However.....

They are, under their filth, mats and horrible habits, adorable. They have learned "Quiet," "Come," "Sit." They have stopped being so neurotic and we have broken most of their bad habits in just a few days. They are smart and sweet and are looking for guidance and WANT to be good little dogs. One is a purebred little white and buff guy with an under bite, the other is a brown little dog that looks almost exactly like a miniature version of a larger breed dog. They know each other and were obviously (by the same bad habits) raised (poorly) together. We will get them neutered, train them and get them into a good, loving home with people who use the brains God gave them.

If these are your dogs, come on by, I'd like to kick your ass.

Dear God, please send me somebody who'll care!
I'm tired of running, I'm sick with despair.
My body is aching, it's so racked with pain.
And dear God I pray as I run in the rain,
that someone will love me and give me a home.
A warm cozy bed I can call my own.
My last owner neglected me and chased me away
to rummage in garbage and live as a stray.
But now, God, I'm tired and hungry and cold.
And I'm afraid that I'll never grow old.
They've chased me with sticks and hit me with stones
while I run in the streets just looking for bones!
I'm not really bad, God, please help me if you can.
For I have just become a "VICTIM OF MAN"!

I'm wormy, Dear God, and I'm ridden with fleas
and all that I want is an owner to please!
If You find one for me, God, I'll try to be good.
I won't run away and I'll do as I should.
I don't think I'll make it too long on my own,
cause I'm getting so weak and I'm so all alone.
Each night as I sleep in the bushes I cry,
cause I'm so afraid, God, that I'm gonna die!
And I've got so much love and devotion to give,
that I should be given a new chance to live.
So, dear God, PLEASE, PLEASE answer my prayer
and send me somebody who WILL really care...

There's no place like home!

I am no longer alone, afraid, and number 10-17445! Listen, I can hear it " TOTO " the sweet sound of my name. Someone truly loves me! Always remember...love never fails.

I couldn't reach TOTO in time. I called the shelter and begged them to please hold her. They put her down. TOTO was only a number and I couldn't stand the thought of her and the millions of others that suffer the same fate of abandonment, abuse, loneliness, and fear to be put out, nameless, never to be thought of again. She is now a beacon for all creatures that are alone and I shall never forget her and the countless millions that follow her fate. This photo of "Toto" posted on my Facebook page has been an inspiration to others. Many have been rescued because of her.  See...she is working here between you and me. With the magic and faith of Toto (God's angel and beacon to all lost creatures), anything is possible. Love never fails!  ~Diana Wegner

JUST MY DOG

He is my other eyes that can see above the clouds; my other ears that hear above the winds. He is the part of me that can reach out into the sea. He has told me a thousand times over that I am his reason for being; by the way he rests against my leg; by the way he thumps his tail at my smallest smile; by the way he shows his hurt when I leave without taking him.
(I think it makes him sick with worry when he is not along to care for me.)

When I am wrong, he is delighted to forgive. When I am angry, he clowns to make me smile. When I am happy, he is joy unbounded.
When I am a fool, he ignores it. When I succeed, he brags.

Without him, I am only another man. With him, I am all-powerful. He is loyalty itself. He has taught me the meaning of devotion. With him, I know a secret comfort and a private peace. He has brought me understanding where before I was ignorant. His head on my knee can heal my human hurts. His presence by my side is protection against my fears of dark and unknown things. He has promised to wait for me... whenever... wherever - in case I need him.
And I expect I will - as I always have.
He is just my dog.

UNWANTED PUPPIES & KITTENS

**********************************************************************************
'Euthanasia' masks the real problem (too many dogs and cats being produced) by making the excess animals disappear from public view. ~Mark Whitt
**********************************************************************************

Dirty, scared, unwanted babies in shelters without their mothers always break my heart. They were discarded by their “owners” who didn’t have enough sense to spay and neuter their cats and dogs or, even worse, intentionaly bred their animals with the intention of selling the offspring for a profit. And then, when no one wanted the babies or they were no longer cuddly, cute and salable, they dumped them at a kill shelter without looking back or giving it a second thought.

People who dump puppies and kittens and shelters, whether they were “accidents” or the result of intentional breeding, should be required to spay/neuter their cats and dogs. Allowing people to shirk their responsibilities and pass the pain and burden of disposing of unwanted babies to others rewards them for their irresponsibility and does nothing to solve the continuing problem.

I'M NOT LOOKING". . .

"BIG UGLY POUND MAN IS GASSING MUMMY". .
I'm not looking hiding my face in my little fat paws
Big ugly pound man pushed mummy through the door
He shoved her in with other cats kittens pups dogs
...I am hiding my face in my paws scared I swear to God
I can see them all jammed in Gas Chamber now
I hear them screaming I want to save them but how
I am peeping through my paws baby tear I'm crying
I am just a baby kitty watching her mother dying
Oh dear God in Heaven can you hear my kitty prayer
Oh dear God in Heaven can you get them out of there
Oh dear God is it true you live in Heaven above
Oh dear God into the Gas Chamber animals they shove
There is a bad man they call him "Dr. Death
He sells gas chambers it takes their last breath
His gas chambers switches are "Set & forget"
Dr. Death sells them to pounds & he is a vet
Mummy is crying lying dying & I am crying too
Oh God can you get her out see what you can do
I hear his footsteps on the cold concrete floor
I know it is my turn now & I will die for sure
He is at my cell door my heart is beating fast
He will gas me today will be my last
He roughly grabs me I can't hide anymore
I see Mummy's body lying dead upon the floor
He opens the gas chamber door in it I am hurled
I take my last look "Good bye cruel world"
He locks the door he turns the gas on high
I choke I gasp it will take me 40 mins to die
We are all dying now they are climbing on me
I cannot breathe my eyes explode I cannot see
The others try to escape scratch & claw the door
My streaming eyes as I die, my face is in my paws. .
I am dead my body thrown beside Mummy on the floor
Together in death once again my face is in my paws. . .

VIVISECTION

**********************************************************************************
Some will take refuge in the old cliches that humans are different from other animals. But when did a difference justify a moral prejudice? When did those with black hair have a right to mistreat those with red hair...or even those with blue or purple hair...Surely the crucial similarity that men share with other animals is the capacity to suffer? Regardless of the number of legs or the woolliness of our fur, we can all suffer.  ~Dr Richard Ryder

KUWAIT: A Soldiers Dog is Coming To The States

There is a war going on and it does not just affect humans. The animals in these countries are being blown up, shot, run over, starving to death, etc..... Soldiers are over there fighting for our country and you can only imagine the stress, the emotional pain, the fatigue they go through. Some of them befriend a dog/cat to lean on, to cry to, to hug, to talk to. Animals always listen no matter what we have to say

Sabre is one of the lucky ones. A Soldier in KUWAIT befriended Sabre, and even if the soldier didn't or doesn't make it home, he wanted to make sure Sabre would be safe. Sabre is going into rescue once a traveler is found to bring him back to the states with them.

As you'll notice, Sabre looks white on his face. He has what is called the doggie version of Vitiligo. This is NOT contagious. It is in his genes.

COLD WEATHER - Please bear in mind that your pets get cold too! Dogs and cats should not be left outside during the cold winter weather for long periods of time, ie. over an hour. If the temperatures fall below -10 degrees, they should only be on their own outside for short periods of time, ie. less than 10 - 20 minutes.
