Help keep stray and outdoor kitties warm this winter.

**********************************************************

For those of us that are not handy or don't know anyone that is handy with power tools this is a fast, easy and cheap way to help the homeless kitties make it through the winter.....Fast & Functional This innovative idea, costing around $30 ,but prices may vary..

In previous years, we learned that finding one plastic bin to fit inside another was the most challenging part of this project. One container should fit inside the other with room still left for polystyrene.

The inner box is an 18 gallon Rubbermaid "Roughneck Tote" - Lowe's part number: 44894 - Cost $5
The outer box is a 35 gallon Rubbermaid "Latching Tote" that is harder to find - Lowe's part number: 212261 - Cost $15
1" polystyrene - Cost $10
Total Cost in 2007-2008: $30
Having difficulty cutting the plastic? "We blew hot air from a hairdryer on the area where we planned to cut. This softened the plastic and it sliced like butter."

Consider surrounding your cats' shelter with bails of straw. Did you know that straw is a fabulously efficient insulator? Homes insulated with 18" wide bails of straw could save 75% on heating & cooling costs. Just think what that could do for your cats!

Place shelters where they will be protected from wind and snow drifts -- particularly those without protective flaps over the door(s) -- otherwise snow could blow in and bury/trap the cats. If there are fixed objects, such as buildings in your feral cat shelter area, pay attention to the way the winds tend to circulate, and place the shelters where there is the least amount of blowing & drifting snow. This could be a lifesaver, particularly for those who endure extreme winter weather, in which roads may be impassable for 1-2 days.

Depending on predators and other animals/hazards in your area, some cats may not use shelters unless there are two exits -- one for them to sneak out should another unwanted animal enter. Consider an emergency exit with a flap that opens from the inside only.

A better doggie wheelchair

**********************************************************************************
Hi all animal lovers-

This is Cheri Hildreth, in Louisville, KY.I want to share an exciting
development that can help paraplegic dogs everywhere thanks to a
wonderful bioengineering professor and dog lover here at UofL, Dr. Gina
Bertocci.
She has designed an adjustable wheelchair for paraplegic dogs
that anyone
can build using items commonly found at a hardware store
(except for two
harnesses that attach to the dog. She is not pursuing a
patent and instead
has posted instructions on her web page for people that
want to build the
wheelchair themselves at http://web.me.com/gbertocci.
I think this is just
wonderful that she is being so selfless and openly sharing
the design
information!
Wheelchairs for paralyzed dogs have been on the market for some time, but
their high cost keeps many pet owners from buying them. Most cost several
hundred dollars and can't be adjusted to keep up with a growing dog. Dr.
Bertocci's canine wheelchair is fully adjustable and weighs about 12 lbs.
Parts can be purchased for less than $200 and assembled in one day using
her design. If you go to the web site listed in this paragraph, you can
see a video of doberman "Maggie" who was hit by a car that fractured her
spine "in action"in her adjustable canine wheelchair designed and built
by Dr. Bertocci. She looks very happy and exploring a field at a pretty
good clip!

My assistant Wanda and I really want to get the word out about this and
plan to share with as many dog lovers, shelters and vets as we can come
up with!
Thanks in advance...

A Rescuer's Prayer

**********************************************************

Now I lay me down to rest
I pray my soul can stand this test
Of watching critters lose their homes
While owners gripe and cry and moan

I long for strength of spirit and
I pray they'll find a home again
Where they will know a loving heart
I can't do much, but it's a start..

And spare me from the owner's pleas
About the baby's allergies
Or how they're moving out of state
Or spitefulness 'tween cat and mate'

Please keep me sane while dealing with
The woman who bought as a gift
A wriggling tiny ball of fluff
That now is playing way too rough

Remind me I should bite my lip
When confronted with "he grew too quick."
"I didn't know he'd get so large."
"He seems to think that he's in charge."

Protect my heart when I hear them say
"I think we'll breed our dog one day."
Sometimes I think it'll break in two;
Each day brings trials harsh and new

And if I die before I wake
I pray one hopeless soul you'll take
My tears are gone, my faith is bare
Lord, please hear my rescue prayer.

National List of Class B Dealers Selling Pets to Labs

**********************************************************
Good information to have:

The link below takes you to a list of Class B Dealers, published by APHIS (animal and plant health inspection services) which is part of the USDA.  Many people who organize transports and recruit adopters/fosters online do not know that there are Class B Dealers who sell pets and pet parts to laboratories.  Rescue organizations may be sending free pets to these people, and unknowingly the pets will be used in experiments or killed for their body parts.  These dealers make a great deal of money selling pets, and pet parts.

If you know of any other Class B Dealers that should be added to this list, please forward their information to all rescues.  We need to drive these Class B Dealers out of business. Thank you.

For those of you not sure exactly what they do, watch this HBO documentary.  You will be sickened and sad beyond belief.  I had no idea about Class B dealers and dog thieves, and pets sold at flea markets, or what happened, until I watched a few years ago.

http://www.hbo.com/docs/programs/dealingdogs/synopsis.html

Be alert to names on list, as they can deceive as rescuers!!!!

A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS

**********************************************************

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.

2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.

3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.

4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.

5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.

6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.

7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.

8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.

9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.

10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

~Take a moment today to thank God for your pets. Enjoy and take good care of them.

Life would be a much duller, less joyful experience without God's critters.

~Now please pass this on to other pet owners. We do not have to wait for Heaven, to be surrounded by hope, love, and joyfulness. It is here on earth and has four legs!
